Enjoy Being Saved despite any suffering

One of Peter’s prayers, coming from the throne of God in heaven.

suffering” and “glory” are often mentioned in this epistle.

That is Peter’s character

1 Pet. 5:7-10

1. Burdens, problems, etc., can get you down for you not to enjoy your salvation.

2. Burdens are to help you in your FELLOWSHIP with the Lord.

God has not called us to simply suffer; it is to

3. Everything the Lord puts across your path is to make you more like Jesus Christ and get you ready for Heaven –

4. Notice also that your suffering is but for a while

5. God’s grace is all-sufficient

I. TO PERFECT YOU

1. God allows suffering in your life to perfect you that can’t be perfected in any other way.

ILL. To show you the defects in your character.

i. what you may not have noticed earlier reveals the weaknesses of your faith.

ILL. After a storm, you see how things hold up, what’s broken, what needs repairs.

ILL. A basketball star makes a lot of baskets but not under pressure.
i. Christian growth involves learning how to deal with issues while under pressure.

ii. You are established and grounded. And when you go through the suffering you come out stronger and more mature than when you went into it.

2. The more pressure, trials, the more your faith increases, the more the Lord is real to you, the more you can enjoy your salvation.

ILL. He got me through before, He will do it again.

ILL. God is not forcing you into compliance. The chastening of the Lord is not because He is a dictator. God will gently, patiently all you to go through certain things for your good.
3. Despite our problems and chastening, our attention ought to be on the Lord and not on our failures or worrying about failing.
ILL. Wrong emphasis on what he did wrong rather no what he did right.

ILL. Father and son played golf. The father was so glad that he and his son could play golf together. A critic (third party) mentioned that the father ought to teach his son to be a better golfer. The father replied, “Are you kidding? The time we’re having together could never be replace with anything else. We’re having a good time.” The fellowship with his son meant more to him than his son making mistakes.
4. In wisdom (1 Cor. 2:6)

In holiness (2 Cor. 7:1)

In grace (2 Cor. 12:9)

II. TO STABLISH YOU IN THE FAITH

ILL. A lighthouse stands on a rock amidst the winds and storm to direct the ships out at sea.

ILL. Pine trees that wave back and forth but do not break
Col. 2:6, 7 “in Him” also vss. 5, 6, 9 HIM!
1. Jesus Christ is the object of attention

i. to establish you (“stable”) comes from “establish.”

2. It’s not a matter of attention of ‘doing more’ things, but realizing that when trouble comes THAT’S THE TESTING GROUND of your peace, patience, comfort and faith are in HIM.

i. NOT in the things that we do.

ii. Good works are not in the end that give you the peace.
ILL. Peter walked on water

ILL. He stilled the storm, after the fact that they suffered “awhile”
But attention was back on HIM (Mark 4:37-41)

When the trial comes, IT IS TO CHECK OUT WHERE YOUR EYES ARE!

3. If the trial distracts you from him then you are not where you ought to be.

i. Circumstances can cause you to chase rabbit trails.

ILL. Pressure causes penalties
God is doing these things to help you understand what it is to enjoy your fellowship with Him.

It is not a competition, but establishing your relationship with your Saviour.

Heb. 13:9

ILL. There is NOTHING that can ‘top’ the things the Lord is doing. He’s on the ‘scene.’

ILL. Cf. Pessimism – always sees the negative side with very little about what is GOD doing.

ILL. Did you really want to get saved? Then why are you so pessimistic, griping, and complaining, etc.

You cannot improve on the salvation that you’ve already received.

It is a happy occasion. “glory” 16 x’s in this one epistle of only 5 chapters. GLORY!!!
ILL. Why we should witness; because of the glory awaiting.

It’s all about JESUS

ILL. It’s all about JESUS – In the Gospels, JESUS healed men, JESUS raised people from the dead, JESUS opened the eyes of the blind, JESUS made the dumb speak – it’s all about JESUS.

Cf. “Look, he’s doing that on the Sabbath.” “Look, his disciples didn’t wash their hands.” “Look, at that woman, washing Jesus’ feet with her hair.” Look, he’s eating with sinners and publicans, etc.”

III. TO STRENGTHEN YOU

1. Spiritual strength is an essential things for spiritual warfare.

i. The trials, suffering come to strengthen you.

2. There is no strengthening without the resistance.

ILL. Working out. The more resistance, the more you have to use your muscles.

When you come up against resistance, THAT is when the Lord ‘kicks in” that work of the Holy Spirit to get you through.

3. You cannot resist sin without spiritual strength.

ILL. The black dog and the white dog.
See 1 Pet. 5:6-8

Luke 22:32 The Lord said to Peter, “strengthen thy brethren…”

Phil. 4:13 “through Christ” not through your discipline.
ILL. Using the sword helps YOU stay sharp

Prov.

The word of God won’t go dull, it’s the people who don’t use their sword who go dull.

“No practice, to pain, no gain.”

“If you don’t use it, you lose it.”
Col. 1:9-11 “strengthened with all might, according to HIS glorious power…”

The bond to strengthened your relationship with the Lord.

For you to get to know Him better.

IV. TO SETTLE YOU in your relationship with the Lord, to enjoy your salvation.

1. From sin after you have already sinned (1 Pet. 4:1)

ILL. Peter knows something about that. He denied the Lord. Wept bitterly. Got right. Preached at Pentecost. 3,000 got saved.
ILL. This building is now settled on its foundation; rests securely on the foundation.

That process may take some years. At that goes on there are flaws that are discovered, rents are sometimes made, to show where the strength is – in the foundation upon which the several parts settle themselves broadly and wholly.

Col. 1:23

23 Если пребудете в вере утвержденными и (непоколебимыми) упрочными, и не будете удалены от надежды евангелия, которое вы слышали, и которое было проповедано каждой твари, что под небом; которого я, Павел, сделался служителем;

2. It sometimes takes God a lifetime to teach us to flee from false refuges – to teach us to be humble, and to trust entirely in His Son, (v. 11) ЕМУ да будет слава и владычество во веки вечные.
ILL. Men and women who had been martyred for our Lord Jesus Christ

ILL. People who before death had a face of serenity (спокойствие)
Those that have been saved and have served and have suffered will reign and will be the rulers on the earth in the Millennium 2 Tim. 2:12; Rev. 1:5, 6
